Temporary Road Closure

If you are considering closing a road for an organised event, such as a street party, gala or parade, you will need to apply for permission and there may be a charge for the administration and production of the legal notice. For road closures that are not administered by the council there may be a charge of £50 to £150.

Charging bands for road closures

Band 1: Local community events run by volunteers or EBC events

  • Council events such as charter fair, Christmas lights switch on events and Festival of Lights
  • One off civic events such as Beating Retreat
  • Remembrance Sunday closures
  • One off royal events such as street parties for jubilees
  • Mercian freedom march or welcome home marches.

Cost: Free

Band 2: Regular local club challenge or community style events or arranged by parish councils

  • Parish Council Christmas lights road closures
  • Well dressings
  • Ilkeston Cycle Club – boxing day hill climb
  • Stanley Village Gala
  • Long Eaton Carnival
  • Breaston May day
  • Little Eaton Carnival.

Cost: £50.00

Band 3: Sponsored events or events which have a participation fee

  • Annual marathon style events which include entry fees
  • Chestnut Fair – Mellors Group
  • Wilne 10k
  • Erewash Triathlon
  • Ilkeston Heritage and Classic Vehicle Show
  • Glow Music and Art festival.

Cost: £150

To fill in a road closure you will need a:

  • Detailed map of the route
  • Map of diversion route (if required)
  • Copy of public liability insurance to indemnify the Borough Council& the County Council. To the value of £5 million for any one accident
  • copy of comprehensive risk assessment
  • Details of diversion signage (if required)

Road Closure Application Form

When applying to close a road, please be aware:

  • If there is a charge for administering the road closure, this will need to be paid on receipt of the application
  • You must provide 8 weeks' notice to allow us time to process your application and carry out our internal consultation. Failure to do so could result in the council refusing your application
  • You must notify all neighbours who will be affected by the closure before applying
  • As organiser, you must arrange for 'road closed' and 'diversion' signs if they are deemed to be required
  • Display the formal temporary road closure notices (which will be provided) seven days before the event and remove them afterwards

All road closure applications are subject to consultation with Derbyshire County Council and Derbyshire Constabulary.
