Sustrans, a sustainable transport charity, is working on the borough council’s behalf to find out why more people don’t get around Ilkeston by walking or cycling instead of being stuck in traffic and shelling out for parking.

The project aims to boost the fitness of locals and reduce car use to protect the environment.

The charity’s project officer Louise Sumner said: “Many people travel to and from work in their car for comfort and convenience. These days, things like congestion, cost and parking can make using your car expensive and stressful. We would like to find out how much this is an issue in Ilkeston with these 21 short questions.”

Those taking part will go into a prize draw to win a £50 shopping voucher.

The survey is open until 30 June - Take part

Cllr Josy Hare, who is Erewash’s Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said: “The charity has already found that four in ten of Ilkeston’s commuters use an alternative to the car to get to work. It would be great for everyone in the town if we could increase that number and reduce the number of local car journeys further by encouraging more people to consider the healthy options of walking or cycling.

“That is why we have partnered with Sustrans – a charity that has experience of connecting people and places, creating liveable neighbourhoods, transforming the school run and delivering a happier, healthier commute.”
