Easter holiday fun days for children who qualify for free school meals have been lined up by Erewash council – with packed lunches included.

The free activity sessions from 10am to 2pm will include games and sports and are open to youngsters aged seven to 12.

The first two are on Wednesday 3 April and Thursday 4 April in Long Eaton – with two more the following week in Ilkeston.

Places can be booked for children from across the borough. Depending on demand, some youngsters who do not get free school meals may be able to attend.

The venue for the first two fun days is the Long Eaton School in Thoresby Road. The Ilkeston sessions – on Wednesday 10 April and Thursday 11 April – are at the Rutland Sports Park, where there will be a giant inflatable.

The events are being delivered as part of the Derbyshire-wide “It’s About Me” holiday club initiative. Funding is from the Department for Education’s holiday activities and food programme.

One local parent said after Erewash held similar fun days over the Christmas holidays: “My children loved it – thank you!  I loved seeing them all red faced from running around when I went to collect them.”

Councillor Claire Marie Poole, who is Erewash’s Lead Member for Health and Wellbeing, said:

“We always want to encourage children in the borough to stay fit and healthy by remaining active during the school holidays. These fun days – which include a healthy lunch for those who get free school meals – have proved a real boon.”
