Peace of mind that if you pay for cremation in advance
While many people are struggling with the cost of living, Erewash and Broxtowe Borough Council are helping people with the spiralling costs of funerals.
Funerals and cremations can be costly and a source of worry for people who are unsure if they, or their family, will be able to afford a ceremony in the future.
According to the latest research the average cost of a funeral is nearly £5,000, with some including all fees costing up to nearly £10,000* Since 2004 average funeral costs have risen by 126%. The “Preventing Poverty Beyond Death” Report by Church Action on Poverty stated the cost of dying has risen seven times faster than the cost of living.
Bramcote Bereavement Service, jointly run by Broxtowe Borough Council and Erewash Borough Council, is viewed as one of the best in the East Midlands, conducting 2,500 cremations per year, around 40 per week.
In order to help reduce the financial burden on their communities they have launched a new plan aimed at taking some of the worry away by enabling people to pre-pay for a cremation at Bramcote Crematorium.
The price is fixed at the time that the plan is taken out, so when the time comes to arrange the funeral there is no need to pay any extra. There is an opportunity to make changes to the funeral when the service is arranged and at that time an additional payment may be required.
Three options are available, starting at £490:
- An unattended cremation
- A cremation with a gathering for up to 20 people
- A larger cremation service for up to 170 people
Richard Mott, from Bramcote Bereavement Service, said: “The end of life is a difficult subject to talk about but we know that people don’t want to leave a financial burden for their families after they’ve gone. Our new pre-paid plan gives people peace of mind that their cremation is secured at today’s prices and will never rise.”
Bramcote Crematorium’s pre-paid plan complements an existing funeral plan or can be used on its own.
“Most funeral plans don’t include costs of cremation which, when the times comes, is a cost that must be met by loved ones. Our plan gives local people the opportunity for the first time to pay this now, save money and make plans for their future,” he added.
