Listed Buildings

Heritage England maintain a list of buildings of national importance for their special historic or architectural interest. It is an offence to carry out any works to a Listed Building without first securing Listed Building Consent from the council. This includes minor works and works to the interior of a Listed Building, even when planning permission is not required.

The council also has a Local List, which identifies other buildings in Erewash that have historic interest, but are not of national importance. Listed Building Consent is not required for works to these buildings, but their interest is taken into account in determining planning applications.

Conservation Areas

When assessing proposals for development in a Conservation Area, special regard will be had to whether or not the proposals preserve or enhance the character or appearance of that area.

There are 23 Conservation Areas in Erewash, including both Ilkeston and Long Eaton town centres, and most village centres.

Local List

The Local List recognises the contribution made by about 160 buildings to the architectural and historic interest of the Borough. These buildings were selected for inclusion as they appear to meet our Criteria for Local Heritage Designations, which were adopted in January 2011.
