Walk Erewash

Erewash Borough Council is working with Walk Derbyshire to encourage people to walk more often every day and to create a culture of walking, as part of everyday life, to help improve physical and mental wellbeing.

The aim is to create a social movement in which Derbyshire becomes a walking county where people can join a walking group, find routes easily or walk more often from their own doorstep.

The following sections encourage people to explore Erewash by foot and to consider joining a local walking group or to take part in a walking activity, which are suitable for all ages and abilities.

Free Volunteer Led Walking Groups in Erewash

Long Eaton Town Walk

A friendly welcoming group who enjoys a chat together as they take a gentle walk along a variety of local mainly circular routes for around an hour. Walks tend to be at a gentle easy going pace on flat terrain.

Every Monday from 10 am until 11 am (apart from Bank Holidays).
Start point - Long Eaton Town Hall, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 1HU.

Monday Strollers

Informal walks around the Ilkeston area. Walks tend to be at a moderate pace with some climbs and mixed terrain.

Every Monday from 10.30 am until 12 noon.
Start point – Victoria Park Leisure Centre, Manner Road, Ilkeston, DE7 8AT.

Stanley Walking Group

Friendly and social group, which runs most weeks depending on the weather, with cake and coffee afterwards at local café. Walks tend to be at a gentle easy going pace on flat terrain.

Every Tuesday from 10.30 am for about 40 minutes.
Start point – Stanley Post Office, 124 Station Road, Stanley, Ilkeston, DE7 6FB

Sofa2Stroll+

Accessible walks in nature aimed at helping those with chronic health conditions get out for a stroll. Walks are at a gentle easy going pace on flat terrain.

Every third Thursday of the month from 10.30 am until 11.30 am and 12.30 pm for strollers that want to do more walking.
Start point – Main car park at Elvaston Castle Country Park, Borrowash Road, Elvaston, Derby, DE72 3EP

Rutland Accessible Walk

A gentle walk around Rutland Sports Park athletics track which is a completely flat surface. Suitable for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Walks are at a gentle easy going pace using the flat surface of the athletics track.

Every Friday from 10 – 11.30 am.
Start point – Outside Rutland Sports Park, West End Drive, Ilkeston, DE7 5GH.

Sandiacre Strollers

A friendly adult walking group. Walks tend to be at a gentle easy going pace on flat terrain.

Every Friday from 10.15 am with various finish times.
Start point – Sandiacre Library, Doncaster Avenue, Sandiacre, NG10 5FJ

Accessible Walk and Talk

A gentle walk around West Park, Long Eaton. Suitable for wheelchair users and people with reduced mobility. Walks are at a gentle easy going pace on flat terrain.

Every third Saturday of each month from 2.00 pm until 4 pm.
Start point – Outside West Park Leisure Centre, Wilsthorpe Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4AA

Walks4Wellbeing

A friendly mixed walking group for men and women who like a gentle ramble. Walks tend to be at a gentle easy going pace on flat terrain. Please note that a men’s walk takes place on the second Sunday in the month.

Every first and third Sunday in the month from 10 am until 12 noon with a Men’s walking group on the second Sunday in the month.
Start point – In the car park behind Draycott Fish Far, 15-17 Derby Road, Draycott, DE72 3NJ

Interested in Setting up a Walking Group or Becoming a Volunteer Walk Leader?

Without our volunteers we wouldn’t be able to run our walks.

Volunteering is a great way to engage with the community, helping to keep people active and healthy, whilst enjoying the outdoors. As a volunteer you will be working with like-minded people to help plan and lead walking routes.

We can provide free Walk Leader training, and you will receive ongoing support from the Council and other experienced volunteers. If you would like to attend Walk Leader training, please register your interest by emailing communityhealthwellbeing@erewash.gov.uk

Walking Routes in Erewash

We have several scenic walking routes and footpaths in Erewash and surrounding countryside including 21 different walks.

Please note that all the walking routes below are currently being checked and updated to be able to reproduce accessible walking resources for each walk, with the full support of Erewash Ramblers. Click the links to download maps, route directions and a more detailed overview of each walk.

A walk starting at St Michael's Church, Breaston (5 miles).

Other Trails & Routes

Nutbrook Trail a 10 mile, traffic free path stretching from Long Eaton to Heanor.

Erewash Canal 11.5miles of paths suitable for walking and cycling. You can even stop off at Trent Lock or Bennerley Viaduct.

The Erewash Valley Trail is a circular walking and cycling route which takes in over 30 miles of waterway and countryside on the Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire border.

Bluetonic have a number of Blue Walks which explore walking routes close to rivers, canals and ponds around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

Derbyshire County Council have a number of Walks and Trails available on its website.

Walking Activities in Erewash

We have produced several fun walking activities which are particularly suited to families with children, including treasure hunts and story walks. Please download the relevant activity below:

West Park Treasure Hunt
The West Park Treasure hunt starts from the West Park Leisure Centre reception area and comprises of 46 questions leading you around West Park and back to the leisure centre reception. It’s suitable for all ages, but particularly for children and allows you to see all the facilities and amenities available at West Park. It will take approximately 1 – 2 hours to complete.

Ilkeston Treasure Hunt
We are currently developing a further treasure hunt which will start from Erewash Museum and include Rutland Sports Park and Victoria Park.

West Park Story Walk
The Story Walk at West Park, Long Eaton comprises of seven pedestals that will be a permanent fixture around the park, telling the story of the adventures of Jake, Amber and their dog, Bob. Make you way around the park to find the pedestals and read the next part of the story or scan the QR codes to have the story read to you.
