The Nutbrook Trail, Ilkeston.

A traffic-free path from Long Eaton to Heanor in Derbyshire, which takes you through the 700-acre Shipley Country Park. A flat route with plenty to see and do along the way, perfect for families.
This route crosses Derbyshire’s Amber Valley, following the attractive Erewash Canal in the first half and the route of the old Stanton Branch Line railway in the second.
Starting beside Tamworth Road in Long Eaton, the ride follows the towpath between the Erewash Canal and River Erewash to the wet meadows of Toton Washlands. Pretty locks and red brick mill buildings are a feature of the opening miles and the pastoral setting is incredibly relaxing. At Stanton Lock you leave the canal behind to join the old railway path, loosely following the course of the River Nutbrook, which gives the route its name.
Travelling through wild, open scrubland you’ll enter Shipley Country Park, with an impressive viewing tower just off the route. The trail through thick woodland leads to the edges of the large Shipley Lake, followed by the smaller Osborne’s Pond. End at the park’s visitor centre and café, or better still, at the volunteer-run Derby Lodge Tea Room in the heart of the park, a charming old building with lovely views across Derbyshire from its gardens.

Bennerley Viaduct

Bennerley Viaduct is an iconic landmark in the East Midlands. Standing 20 metres high above the valley of the River Erewash, and a quarter of a mile long, it is no surprise it is known as The Iron Giant of the Erewash Valley. Grade II* listed, this rare engineering triumph was was built in 1877-78 by the Great Northern Railway to carry the Friargate Line from Nottingham to Derby. Born from the age of steam, iron and coal, it is the longest Victorian wrought iron viaduct in the country and one of only two still standing. Connecting Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, it was described by the World Monuments Fund as “an extraordinary monument” and by Historic England as “a stunning example of the genius of British Engineering.”

Erewash Canal.

The Erewash Canal is a wonderful route for exploring both the Derbyshire countryside that inspired DH Lawrence, passing past small towns and villages just outside Derby and Nottingham. The canal is very popular for walking and cycling in green and peaceful surroundings. It sees less boating traffic than some canals, so it is a great place for all to escape the crowds.

Trent Lock:

Trent Lock is a major waterway junction where rivers and canals meet. Trent Lock is the first lock on the Erewash Canal and a great place to spot boats. A large settlement grew around the lock because it was a busy meeting point of four waterways (Upper River Trent, River Soar, Trent & Mersey Canal) Erewash Canal). Trent Lock is a popular spot to ride your bike, dangle a rod, take a short walk – usually up to Cranfleet Lock or Sawley Lock, or go spot of wildlife spotting.

Ilkeston Library:

More than just a library, a great place to meet, mingle and let you and your families minds run wild with books. Ilkeston Library also hosts a book group, a careers service drop-in and  a knit & natter club and much more.
