What Happens to Your Recycling and Rubbish

Where your household waste and recycling goes.

Black bin

The household waste from your black bin is delivered to a waste transfer station in Ilkeston where Derbyshire County Council arrange for it to be put on larger vehicles and sent for disposal. The waste goes to energy from waste plants or is made into a fuel.

Disposing of waste like this is expensive. It is important not to put recycling or items such as electricals and batteries in the black bin.

Blue bin

The recycling collected in your blue bins/green bags is delivered to a waste transfer station in Ilkeston where it is put on larger vehicles before being transported for sorting by New Earth Solutions in Grantham.

Here the items are sorted by hand and machines into different types of plastics, paper, cardboard, metals and glass before being sent to be made into new products.

It is important to only put the correct items in the blue bin as wrong items cause problems when the recycling is sorted. Making sure that items are clean and loose also helps.

Brown bin

The garden waste from your brown bins is delivered to a waste transfer station in Ilkeston where Derbyshire County Council arrange for it to be put onto larger vehicles and taken to a composting site near Doncaster.

It takes around 16 weeks for the compost to be made. The garden waste is shredded and placed in large rows in the open air.

The material is turned over regularly to add in air, this helps it to naturally breakdown. The final stage removes any large items to ensure the material meets the British Standard for compost.

The compost is then used as a nutrient rich soil improver in the horticultural industry.
