Residents are being reminded that Erewash Borough Council is on hand to offer support and advice for anyone who is struggling to pay their council tax.

Anyone having difficulty keeping up with payments can contact the council as soon as they get into arrears, with help and advice available on the council tax pages.

Residents can manage their Council Tax account online using a My Erewash account where requests can be submitted, application forms completed and help and advice requested. There is also the option to request a call back for those who need assistance and would prefer to speak to a member of staff. Residents can provide details of household income and expenditure, to enable an affordable and sustainable payment plan to be set up.

Those in receipt of a low income may qualify for Council Tax Support and there are other Hardship Awards that the council can provide to help people to pay.

Council tax bills for 2022-2023 were issued to all households in the borough in April, the start of the financial year. Council tax pays for services provided by Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Authority and Erewash Borough Council.

People can apply to pay council tax by weekly, fortnightly or half-yearly instalments, or can request to pay over 12 instalments (April-March). Residents can complete the ‘Council Tax Direct Debit Form’ using their My Erewash account.

Though the majority of residents pay their council tax by direct debit some households will be receiving texts or emails from Erewash Borough Council to request payment. Non-payment of council tax can result in court action, including court costs, as well as the debt, which can add hundreds of pounds to the bill.

Councillor Wayne Major, Lead Member for Resources at Erewash Borough Council, says

“It is important that people keep on top of council tax payments. We understand that sometimes, paying late can be for a valid reason and would encourage people to get in touch as soon as possible so that we can help in any way that we can. Our staff are always happy to help.”

The council understands that people may be struggling financially and has information and advice available on its website on our cost of living page.

There is also an explainer video on the council’s YouTube channel for anyone needing help in using My Erewash.
