A new programme of community household waste collections is planned for 2020/21. Dates and site locations will be announced in due course.

The community household waste collections are for small bulky waste items only.  All collections take place between 8am and 11.30am.

The following items can be taken to the collection points: 

  • Carpet (cut into a manageable size that can be lifted into a refuse vehicle).
  • Bagged soil (up to four black bin bags that can be picked up safely).
  • Small wooden items e.g. fencing panels with each panel no more than 1200mm (4 feet) wide, doors, bed frames, head boards (not including mattresses).
  • Unwanted/damaged toys.
  • Small fixtures eg skirting boards no longer than 1500mm (5 feet), pedestals, wc unit, small vanity unit.
  • One off items eg aluminium greenhouse frame (glass must be securely tied boxed and/or wrapped).
  • Old books, DVDs/CDs.
  • Small items of scrap metal eg unwanted tools.
  • Clothing, bedding, cushions, textiles.
  • Garden pots and garden furniture sets.
  • Small items of furniture e.g. bed side units, stools, small tables, dining room chairs, small book cases (up to 5 shelves), head boards, coffee tables, deck-chairs, shelving, TV/Video/DVD units.
  • Small household electrical items eg toasters, hairdryers, kettles, irons, scales, hand mixers, bedside lamps etc.
  • Glass and mirrors (these items must not be broken and placed safely in a box before bringing to your local collection point).
  • Mechanical reclining chairs will be collected as long as the motors and metal frame work have been removed.

Items that cannot be taken to the collection points:

  • Large items more suitable for the chargeable collection service eg mattresses, wardrobes, settees, sofas, recliners (manual /electric).
  • Construction waste/materials i.e. hardcore, rubble, bricks, concrete blocks, paving slabs etc.
  • Recycling/card board boxes etc that would normally be collected at kerbside.
  • Very large/heavy items i.e. oil tanks, cars, motorcycles.
  • Items that are dangerous/unsafe by design or condition.
  • Engine/vehicle parts.
  • Weapons and firearms (including air rifles/pistols/knives).
  • Hazardous / biological waste or materials for which specific licences are required for disposal eg clinical waste.
  • Animal bedding.
  • Plaster board.
  • TV/computer screens.
  • Tyres.
  • Car Batteries.
  • Tins of paint.
  • Oil/fuel.
  • Food/garden/residual waste suitable for disposal via the kerb side collection service.
  • Asbestos, solvents, chemicals or any hazardous or flammable materials waste.
  • Gas bottles.
  • Commercial, trade or industrial waste.
  • White Goods:  Domestic fridge/freezer; cooker; washing machine; rumble dryer; washer/dryer; ovens; hobs;microwaves.

 The council reserves the right to exclude/reject any item(s) not considered suitable for the service.

We are committed to providing business ratepayers with a trade waste collection service and we offer a range of containers and collection schedules that suits most commercial business needs.

Container sizes are 140ltr, 240ltr, 360ltr, 660ltr and 1100ltr, and collections take place from Monday to Friday. All containers must be available for collection by 7am as the route may vary due to accidents, roadworks or workload.

We also collect several types of business associated clinical waste and can also make special 'one off' collections of some large trade items at pre-arranged prices subject to time availibility.

Legislation

All businesses that produce waste are subject to The Duty of Care which is a legal requirement under the Environmental Protection Act to dispose of their waste responsibly using a registered waste carrier to ensure the waste is not illegally disposed of by others.

We can request businesses to produce their Duty of Care documents. Breach of Duty of Care is an offence, with a penalty of up to £5000 on summary conviction or an unlimited fine on conviction or indictment.

In order to provide advice to commercial premises to help them comply with waste management legislation, we have a dedicated commercial contracts officer to help with all aspects of business waste, please call our customer service advisors on 0115 907 2244 and ask to speak to our trade waste officer for more details. 

Trade/commercial waste – spillage

All spillage caused by the collectors must be reported to us on 0115 907 2244, if you see waste which has been spilled and it might be an health and safety hazard you must also report this.

Some spillage may be deemed as a hazard and should be reported to the emergency services immediately, if large quantities of oil, paint or fuel are spilled on the road and it is likely to cause an accident the emergency services must be called by dialling 999.

Hazardous waste

Some waste is designated as hazardous waste such as oils, paints and chemicals and this cannot be placed in normal commercial waste. For advice please contact our commercial waste officer.

Erewash Borough Council have introduced a commercial waste recycling service to align our waste management priorities and objectives with the Derbyshire County Council Waste Management Strategy priorities and objectives.

The council now offers a weekly or fortnightly commercial recycling service.

We will take paper, cardboard, metal cans, aluminium foil & containers, aerosols (empty), plastic showing the recycling logo with 1, 2, or 3 and glass. These can be mixed in to the same container.

Container sizes are 140 litres, 240 litres, 360 litres, 660 litres or 1100 litre.
