FairWEBIt’s that time of year again, spectacular rides, excited children (and adults!) can mean only one thing; Ilkeston Charter Fair 2018 is nearly upon us!

The town centre will once again welcome one of the oldest and largest street fairs in Europe, transforming the Market Place and surrounding streets into a colourful spectacle when the historic fair rolls into town for its 766th year!

The Charter Fair attracts thousands of people with some of the biggest and best travelling rides in the country, from white-knuckle thrillers through to firm family favourites such as the ghost train and dodgems. There will be rides suitable for all ages to keep the whole family entertained.

This year’s event runs from Wednesday 17 October until Saturday 20 October and will once again be given a ceremonial opening on Thursday 18 October – when the Mayor of Erewash, Councillor Chris Corbett will ‘ring the bell’ to get the 2018 Charter Fair officially underway.

The traditional ceremony, which includes the reading of the 1252 Charter, will take place outside the town hall with a covered walkway in place for the first time. Local families and visitors will gather round to join the showmen to officially welcome the fair. This year, pupils from Kensington and Chaucer Junior Schools will present the fair banners they have created, depicting the history of the charter fair, to the Mayor. Guests at the opening ceremony will include representatives from other local authorities in Derbyshire.

Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, says:

“This historic event brings thousands of visitors into the town every year to enjoy the fantastic atmosphere and to experience the thrills on offer. We are always proud to welcome the Charter Fair and look forward to the town centre being transformed into a colourful scene full of rides and music. Both young and old can enjoy all the fun of our celebrated street fair!”

The Fair is situated Bath Street, Market Place, East Street, South Street, Queen Street, Wharncliffe Road and Pimlico. Attractions are open from 6pm-11pm on Wednesday 17 October and from 12 noon-11pm Thursday 18, Friday 19 and Saturday 20 October.
