Armed Forces Covenant

The armed forces covenant is a promise from the nation that those who serve, or have served, and their families, are treated fairly. Erewash Borough Council helps to deliver on this promise at a local level by encouraging awareness, understanding and integration between the armed forces community and the wider local community.

The covenant is a voluntary agreement encouraging local communities to develop a relationship with the armed forces community in our area. This includes serving members of the armed forces, their families and veterans. The aims of the covenant are to:

  • Encourage local communities to support the armed forces community in their areas.
  • Nurture public understanding and awareness of issues affecting armed forces communities.
  • Recognise and remember the sacrifices faced by the armed forces community.
  • Encourage activities which help integrate the armed forces community into local life.
  • Encourage the armed forces community to help and support the wider community, whether through participation in events and joint projects or other forms of engagement.

Our commitment to the Armed Forces

Erewash Borough Council has signed the Armed Forces Covenant and Councillor Kate Fennelly is the Council's Armed Forces Covenant 'Champion', making sure we achieve our commitment to serving personnel, veterans and their families.

EBC has Bronze status in the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, which is a scheme that acknowledges employers who support defence personnel, including reservists, veterans, wounded injured and sick, families and cadets.

The Sherwood Foresters Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment.
This infantry regiment was formed in 1881 and after nearly 90 years of British Army service it merged with The Worcestershire Regiment in 1970. Its traditions are now continued by the Mercian Regiment.  EBC's link to the Sherwood Foresters were celebrated by giving the regiment the Freedom of the Borough in 2008. The Ilkeston branch of the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters Association closed at the end of November 2016 and their historic standard and other artefacts were donated to the Erewash Museum as part of their War Room exhibition.

814 Naval Air Squadron.
Known throughout the Royal Navy as the ‘Flying Tigers’, due to their distinctive badge, EBC are affiliated with 814 Naval Air Squadron as part of our continued commitment to support the armed forces community. Based at the Royal Navy Air Station at Culrose in Cornwall, they are a front-line anti-submarine squadron, operating helicopters from ships and aircraft carriers.

Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust

The Armed Forced Covenant Trust Fund makes grant awards to support the Armed Forces Community and manages the grant programmes funded by the Trust Fund. Find out more and apply for a grant on their website.
