Freedom of Erewash for cycling supremo

Olympic hero Dave Brailsford is to be rewarded for his sterling efforts by being granted the Freedom of the Borough.

The decision to grant Dave the Freedom of Erewash was unanimously granted at an extraordinary Erewash Borough Council meeting on October 11th.

Dave is to receive the honour, which is very rarely handed-out, having led Team GB’s all-conquering cycling team to countless medals during the summer’s Olympics games in London.

The Ilkeston-based coach, who works as Performance Director of British Cycling, has been widely credited for masterminding Britain’s incredible cycling success, which also took-in numerous medal triumphs in the 2004 & 2008 Olympic Games. He also guided Team Sky to an historic victory in this year’s Tour De France in his role as General Manager for the team.

In recent years, only the Local Mercian Regiment in 2007 have been presented with the Freedom of the Borough. The rare honour is a ceremonial title which dates back to the Middle Ages. Recipients receive an ornate scroll and casket, as well as a medal to mark their achievements.
