Planning and Buildings

We are responsible for a wide range of planning services.

Planning Policy

The Planning Policy Section at Erewash Borough Council determines how planning will be managed across the Borough including policy and advice, the appearance of new development, the impact on the built environment and the promotion of Economic Development. The section encompasses the following disciplines (please click on these disciplines to view their own individual web-pages):

  • Planning Policy and Implementation (opens in a new window) – We provide a strategic planning framework through the Local Plan and the Local Development Framework against which development decisions are made. The policies within the framework set out how we will meet our housing and economic needs whilst protecting and enhancing our environment. We also facilitate and manage regeneration and environmental improvement projects.
  • Conservation and Design – We advise on the built environment, dealing with all matters relating to historic buildings and historic areas and provide design guidance where appropriate.
  • Economic Development – We promote economic development and regeneration within the Borough through the implementation of the Erewash Economic Regeneration Strategy and by working closely with the Erewash Partnership.
  • Housing Strategy – We provide strategic housing functions which include the production and delivery of the Housing Strategy; research on housing needs, local representation on the Supporting People Programme, and partnership working to ensure the delivery of appropriate affordable and vulnerable peoples housing in the Borough.
  • Markets (opens in a new window) – We are responsible for the upkeep and management of the main retail markets in each of the two principal towns within the district (Long Eaton and Ilkeston).
  • Long Eaton Townscape Heritage Initiative (THI) (opens in a new window) – Is an exciting and innovative project which seeks to revitalise Long Eaton’s historic centre through the repair, reinstatement and conservation of the town’s heritage.
  • Technical Support – We support the above disciplines by carrying out; research and monitoring of data and statistics, mapping, surveying, document production and publication and planning searches.

Development control and enforcement

  • Development Control - processes and determines planning applications in accordance with the Local Plan and other material considerations, processes and determines applications for adverts, listed building consent, agricultural buildings etc and provides development control advice.
  • Enforcement - investigates unauthorised development and instigates enforcement action where appropriate, monitors new development and planning legal agreements and provides advice on planning enforcement matters. To report an alleged breach of planning control email planning@erewash.gov.uk. We will acknowledge your email as soon as the case has been logged and allocated to an Officer.
  • Tree Preservation - Erewash is rich in natural assets and has a substantial number of mature native species of tree which are considered to be worthy of protection through Tree Preservation Orders or Group Tree Preservation Orders. In addition trees within the Boroughs Conservation Areas require consent from the Council prior to works being carried out to them. For queries regarding the status of trees or general advice please contact 0115 9072232 or email treepreservation@erewash.gov.uk.
