Show You Care - Support the Triathletes
Motorists and local residents are being urged to take extra care around the Wilsthorpe Road area of Long Eaton when the annual Erewash Novice Triathlon takes place on Sunday 13th July.
The popular event is a celebration of health and fitness and is aimed at beginners – with participants taking to public roads for the cycling section of the competition.
Police officers will be on hand to direct traffic on the stretch of Wilsthorpe Road near to West Park Leisure Centre and around the busy Wilsthorpe Island during the morning, with the fun event expected to finish around 1pm.
Information signs have already been placed at the site, but residents are also being reminded that: • West Park Leisure Centre car park and recycling areas will be closed between 5.00am and 1.00pm on the day of the event. • The Leisure Centre swimming pool will also be closed to the public for normal use until 1.00pm that afternoon.
The Erewash Novice Triathlon has been backed by Erewash Borough Council’s Pride in Erewash Campaign and is aimed at encouraging new people to get involved in the sport. The triathlon will get underway early morning with staggered start times throughout the day and features a 400m swim in the swimming pool, a 10-mile bike ride and a 5km run inside West Park.
Councillor Mike Wallis, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for Culture and Leisure, said: “Our Novice Triathlon is an extremely popular event and a fun day for all the family. But we do need to remember that this triathlon is for beginners and so I urge motorists and local residents to show consideration while the event takes place.
“I hope that local residents and family and friends of those taking part will turn out in force to cheer on the participants and enjoy what should be a fun and fascinating event.”
As well as receiving backing from Pride in Erewash, the event has also been sponsored by Sport Development and GEM Vending.
