Eco-lights for retailers to dazzle Christmas shoppers
Grants of up to £200 for new, low-energy, festive lights for shops and businesses in Long Eaton and Ilkeston this Christmas will be up for grabs by retailers and traders, Councillors agreed this week.
Around 60 shops in the Erewash’s two market towns, and 30 more across the borough, will benefit from grants towards new wall-mounted decorations to bring a sparkle to the high streets during the festive season.
The decision at today’s Erewash Borough Council’s Executive Council meeting comes in response to Long Eaton and Ilkeston traders’ comments.
Councillor Geoffrey Smith, Erewash Borough Council Lead Member for Regeneration and Planning said: “With our carbon footprint in mind, all the new lights and the extensions to Ilkeston and Long Eaton town centre Christmas lights will be selected for their low energy use. We want to brighten up the towns for Christmas, and do all we can to help make it a bumper Christmas for everyone. I’m sure traders and residents alike will welcome us listening to our local businesses and supporting them.
“We have some great shops offering very good value in Erewash’s two market towns and I would encourage everyone to shop locally this Christmas.”
Grants will be allocated on a match-funding basis. Traders wishing to apply for grants should contact Erewash Borough Council by telephoning 0845 907 2244 and ask for Christmas lighting information.
