Council Celebrates A Milestone Moment
Delighted Councillors and employees are celebrating the ‘good news’ announcement that it is no longer necessary for Erewash Borough Council to be in voluntary engagement with the Government.
John Healey, the Minister for Local Government, made the announcement this week and congratulated the authority on its service improvements over the last five years.
In a letter to the Council, Mr Healey praises the ‘clear and demonstrable improvements’ Erewash Borough Council has made to the services it provides to the local community – and he applauds the clear progress that has been made since the authority accepted voluntarily the Government’s support to improve its performance back in 2003.
The morale-boosting news has been warmly welcomed by the Council, which is also awaiting the outcome of an Audit Commission inspection last month – with hopes that a positive assessment from that inspection will be released in the autumn.
Councillor Chris Corbett, Leader of Erewash Borough Council, said: “We are absolutely delighted with the Government’s decision that the formal engagement process is no longer necessary.
“This good news is an acknowledgment of the hard work that has been put in by everyone since 2003 and we are all thrilled that our progress and improvement has been recognised.
“It has been a very demanding time and we acknowledge the help we have had over the last few years – but it is good that the Government has recognised that we can be trusted to continue our improvement.
“There are so many positive and good things that we, as a council, are doing in this borough and this is a real milestone moment. We celebrate this news but, of course, we continue to work hard to build on our progress and strive, as ever, for continuous and constant improvement.”
