Children Told to Rethink Rubbish

Children Told to Rethink Rubbish

Children will be asked to encourage family, friends and everyone they meet . . . as the county’s top local authority for recycling launches an even stronger drive across Erewash to urge people to reduce, reuse and recycle waste.

Erewash Borough Council has joined forces with Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire to unveil the all-new Rethink Rubbish Campaign – a go-ahead project that will push the borough’s recycling success even higher.

The scheme will see the recycling message taken into the classrooms at junior schools across the borough from this month, thanks to the council’s Pride in Erewash Campaign and Groundwork.

As soon as pupils understand the importance of recycling and composting, they will be off to encourage their family and friends to reduce, reuse and recycle waste at all times.

Pupils will also have the chance to enter a poster design competition, with the winning design being transferred on to the borough’s bin lorries next Spring.

Councillor Robert Parkinson, Erewash Borough Council’s Lead Member for the Environment, said: “Recycling is a global issue that demands local action and the Rethink Rubbish Campaign will be an excellent way of influencing all of us to deal with all our waste responsibly - especially as it is the children’s and future Erewash generations that we need to consider.

“I encourage people to listen to what these children will be telling us about and to act by making ‘reducing, reusing and recycling’ waste part of our daily habits.”

Groundwork Derby & Derbyshire’s Project Officer, Maria Desborough, added: “We are very excited about being able to work with so many young people of the borough. The recycling message is key to our organisation’s ethos of engaging with local communities to improve the environment for all.”
