Clean-up Volunteers Needed for Community Day

Clean-up Volunteers Needed for Community Day

Kind hearted volunteers have signed up to help transform two sites in the College Street area of Long Eaton . . . but more willing residents are needed to help with the bumper clean-up.

The special Community Day tidy-up will be held on Saturday 5th July and is being led by members of St John’s Church, which is on College Street, as part of the nationwide Hope 08 project – an initiative which encourages churches to strengthen links with their local communities.

As part of the project’s ‘One Million Hours of Kindness’, volunteers will work to transform the area outside Highfields Medical Centre on College Street and nearby St James’ Park, behind the Co-op, through litter picking, fence painting, graffiti removal and the planting of flowers and shrubs.

The makeover has been backed by Erewash Borough Council’s Pride in Erewash campaign along with the local police and Fire Service – and those already signed up to help have pledged to turn them into places in which the local community can take pride and enjoy using.

The day will start with a breakfast for all the volunteers in St John’s Church Hall at 9am followed by the clean-up outside Highfields Medical Centre at 10am and work on St James’ Park at 2pm.

Rev Philip Waller, vicar of St John’s, said: “A lot of people feel strongly about the public spaces in the local area and would like to use them more, but are put off by their appearance.

“This day provides the perfect opportunity for people to club together and reclaim two of our public spaces – a task that one person would never tackle on their own. For Christians, there is a moral imperative to care for creation and to build up the community. We are happy to work with anyone who shares a concern for the general well-being of people and nature.”

The day has been designed for people of all ages, including families, to get involved. Anyone who would like to help on the day, or would like more information, contact St John’s church office on 0115 946 4611.
