Homelessness Strategy 2008-2013

The Homelessness Act 2002 brought about changes in the way local and central government respond to homelessness.

These changes require housing authorities to take a longer term strategic approach to responding to the needs of homeless families and individuals to ensure that the services available are sufficient to tackle homelessness.

As a result of the above act, we have together with other statutory and voluntary agencies, carried out a review of levels of homelessness and service provision across the borough, and produced a five-year strategy to tackle unmet homelessness needs.

We adopted our first Homelessness Strategy 2003-2008 in July 2003. This strategy has now come to an end, so a further review was undertaken during 2007 to find out what the current position is in respect of homelessness and service provision. As a result of this the new Homelessness Strategy 2008-2013 has been formally adopted.

Derbyshire Homeless Watch Survey

The Derbyshire Homeless Watch Survey was introduced in 2008 and has been running ever since providing a snapshot survey of homelessness in the County.  The survey records details of everyone who presents as homeless to participating agencies during a two week period from the end of September to early October.

Agencies across the county who regularly come into contact with homeless people are invited to participate by completing survey forms for homeless people presenting to them during the survey period.

Relevant agencies across Derbyshire are approached in order to take part in the survey by submitting returns.  Participating agencies complete a survey form for each individual who presented to them as homeless in the survey period.

The results are compiled to create a main report and a set of district reports which summarises survey findings for each of the boroughs and districts within the county, including Derby City.
