Art in the community

The Howitt Bequest

Our own art collection, The Howitt Bequest, can be viewed at the Town Hall, Long Eaton.

The collection consists largely of oils and watercolours dating from the eighteenth century.

Mr Charles Sydney Howitt left his collection of paintings to the Long Eaton Urban District Council in 1918 to commemorate his family's ties with the town.

We took possession of the collection in 1921 and it was first displayed in The Hall, Long Eaton.

Since Local Government Reorganisation in 1974, the collection has been in the care of Erewash Borough Council.

During the 1970's, and prior to the opening of the new Civic Centre in 1991, the collection was hung in Mayfield House, Derby Road, Long Eaton, which served as the Town Hall.

The Howitt Bequest now resides in both The Hall and the Civic Centre, Long Eaton.
