Privacy policy and data protection

The Data Protection Act 1998 (DPA) aims to promote high standards in the handling of personal information, and to protect the individual's right to privacy.

The DPA applies to anyone holding information about living individuals in electronic format and in some cases on paper. They must follow the eight data protection principles of good information handling.

Data Protection Act 1998

The aims of the previous Data Protection Act 1984 are as follows, and these principles still apply under the 1998 Act:

  • To protect the rights of individuals who have information held on them on computers and similar automatic processing equipment
  • To enable individuals to seek compensation through the courts for damage and associated distress caused by the loss, destruction or unauthorised disclosure of data, or by inaccurate data
  • To enable individuals to rectify or erase inaccurate data held about them, on computers and similar automatic processing equipment and
  • To ensure that data users (e.g. this Council) or computer bureaux are open about their use of personal data and maintain good practice in relation to the data they hold.
