Value of Sport

Playing sport can promote leadership skills and improve physical development and provide young people with a broad range of social skills. Positive sporting experiences can also help interaction, increase self confidence, self esteem and the development of positive social values. To this end Erewash Sports Development Unit can provide assistance on range of grants and awards to service the community and its clubs.

Active Communities Development Fund (ACDF)
A Lottery-funded programme designed to increase sports participation among black and ethnic minority communities, people with disabilities, women and girls, people on low incomes.4 award rounds a year. Applications for total project costs - £5,000 - £30,000.

Active England (formerly Community Capital Fund)
Funding for the programme nationally is £108 million, with £9.7 million allocated to the East Midlands region. The minimum level of funding is £50,000. The national programme priorities are:

  • To create and support sustainable innovative multi-activity environments in areas of social, sport and health deprivation in England by 2005
  • To increase participation in sport and physical activity among all sections of society, but particularly those which are typically under-represented in sport and physical activity participation.

Awards schemes for primary schools - recognise and reward outstanding physical activity programmes.

Awards for All
A joint programme supported by Heritage Lottery Fund, Arts Council of England, the National Lottery Charities Board and Sport England. It gives all applicants the opportunity to apply for Lottery grants of £500 to £5000. These are designed to support short-term revenue schemes that develop opportunities for participation in sport, particularly by target groups. Examples include coach training, competitions, leagues, participation programmes, and associated non-personal items of equipment.

ClubMark
Sport England Clubmark is a cross-sport recognition of sports clubs that are committed to providing a safe, effective, child-friendly environment. National governing bodies incorporate the Clubmark criteria into their own development and accreditation programmes, and clubs gain accreditation through their NGB. A generic Clubmark Resource Pack has been produced for clubs to use during their accreditation process.

Football Foundation
The Football Foundation provides sporting facilities and promotes education by:

  • Putting in place a new generation of modern football facilities in parks, local leagues and schools
  • Providing capital and revenue support for the running of grass roots football
  • Strengthening the links between football and the community and harnessing the games potential as a force for good in society.

Foundation for Sport and the Arts
Established by the football pools promoters, this body has approximately £60 million annually to donate to sports and arts organisations. Grant aid may be made for the support of 'athletic games', 'athletic sport', 'non-athletic sport', or 'the Arts'. Please contact the Foundation for definitions of these terms.

Inclusive Fitness Initiative
The Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI) is a Sport England Lottery Funded project. The IFI works with local authority fitness suites to support them to deliver a provision catering for both disabled and non-disabled people. The support is delivered through four key elements: Equipment;
Training; Marketing; and, Sports Development. IFI is managed by the English Federation of Disability Sport (EFDS) through an operating company called Montgomery Leisure Services.

New Opportunities Fund (NOF) for PE and Sport
Funded through the New Opportunities Fund (see below), this scheme is intended to improve the PE and sporting facilities available for young people and the community in general by:

  • refurbishing existing, and building new indoor and outdoor, sports facilities for school and community use
  • providing initial revenue funding to support the development and promotion of these sporting facilities for community use
  • building or refurbishing outdoor adventure facilities, where this would benefit young people

Education authorities will consult with local schools, national sporting organisations and other strategic partners to co-ordinate spending plans for the grants.

New Opportunities Fund (NOF) Playing Fields and Community Green Spaces
Launched in April 2001, this fund allocates more than £100 million in lottery grant aid with the aim of creating greener and fitter communities by transforming children's play and playing fields and upgrading green spaces across the UK. Just over £31million will be provided to protect and improve fields and school playgrounds with an emphasis on community use.

Safer Sports Grounds Programme
Addresses the needs of Rugby League, Rugby Union and Cricket in making their grounds safer for spectators. 50% match funding required, and support of relevant National Governing Body.

Space for Sport and the Arts (SSA)
A joint programme between DCMS, DfEE and three National Lottery distributors including Sport England. Funding of £130 million is intended to develop around 250-300 capital projects located in primary schools providing enhanced opportunities in sport and arts for local communities.

Specialist Sports Colleges
Specialist Sports Colleges are part of the DfES Specialist Schools Programme. Sports Colleges act as regional focus points for excellence in PE and community sport, extending links between families of schools, sports bodies and communities, sharing resources and developing and spreading good practice. They aim to increase participation in PE and sport for pre and post 16 year olds and develop the potential of talented performers. Sports Colleges are formed from existing maintained secondary schools for pupils aged 11 to 16 or 11 to 19. All such schools are eligible to apply.

Sporting Champions
Sporting Champions is a scheme designed to use sporting heroes and heroines to inspire and motivate young people to participate in sport. The scheme enables sports people to visit schools, youth clubs and sports clubs at no cost to talk to young people about the benefits of sport and a healthy lifestyle. All primary, secondary and special schools, and youth organisations catering for young people of primary or secondary school age can apply for a Sporting Champions visit.

Awards schemes for secondary schools that recognise and reward outstanding physical activity programmes.

Sportsmatch
This scheme encourages the business sector to invest in sport at grass roots level. Sportsmatch will double the money made available by sponsors to successful applicants for new or enhanced sports activity subject to limits of £1,000 minimum and £50,000 maximum. Target group work is a priority.

Volunteer Investment Programme (VIP)
The Volunteer Investment Programme is a free membership programme targeted at volunteer co-ordinators within clubs, governing bodies, university sports associations and local authorities. Its aim is to support organisations in the development and implementation of a volunteer management plan. VIP support is delivered in the following ways:

  • an initial Welcome Pack
  • the opportunity to obtain training and learn new skills
  • the opportunity to attend free seminars and find out more about what is happening in sport
  • a quarterly mailing (fact sheets, hot topics, updates)
  • the opportunity to receive up to £5,000 and public recognition for good practice in volunteer management
  • access to special promotional material and discounted publications

World Class: Coaching
The UK Sports Institute (UKSI) Coaching Programme aims to support UK coaches in achieving success at the highest level of international competition.
The Programme will operate in conjunction with the British Olympic Association (BOA) and sports coach UK to ensure maximum co-ordination and benefit to coaches in the UK.

World Class: Events
Supports the attraction and operation of major sporting events in the UK. UK Sport retains the lead role as Lottery Distributor for the bidding and staging of major events, although if an application does not meet UK Sport criteria then the application is forwarded for further consideration to the appropriate Home Country Sports Council.

World Class: Performance
This programme supports the training and preparation programmes of elite performers who have the potential to win medals, or equivalent, in significant international competitions and events such as the Olympics and Paralympics, now and within the next six years.
Launched in November 1996, World Class Performance has already awarded some £30m to over 30 different sports.

This programme will assist the development of talented performers with the potential to win medals, or equivalent, in significant future international competitions and events within the next ten years.

This programme will help identify and nurture a specific number of performers who have the necessary characteristics to achieve future World Class success.
