Other Housing Advice & Support Services

Barnardo’s Reach Out Project

9 Mundy Street
Heanor
Derbyshire
DE75 8LB
01773 717212

Opening Times:
Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm

The project supports Care Leavers from Amber Valley and Erewash, aged 15 to 21, as they make their way into
adulthood. We give practical and emotional help, under the Children (Leaving Care) Act 2000 and Derbyshire Leaving and After Care policies and procedures.

We will support young people aged 16 to 19 who have no support from family and are homeless or at risk of
homelessness. We call these ‘Supported Young People’.  This support could mean helping them to get support from their family, or finding somewhere to live on, helping them to get work or training and supporting them emotionally.
We are only funded to work with 20 Supported Young People at any time, so we can’t work with them for a long time because then we’d have to say no to new people. We aim to work intensively with them for up to 6 months to help them to sort things out. We expect that they will be referred to us by other agencies, who will have already dealt with the immediate crisis and formed an assessment of the situation. We are a small additional service.

Derbyshire Housing Aid

Derbyshire Housing Aid is working in partnership with Erewash Borough Council’s Housing Options Team to tackle poverty, homelessness and poor housing, as well as preventing financial exclusion. Derbyshire Housing Aid’s core service is the provision of FREE specialist independent advice on housing debt and welfare benefits issues, helping to secure accommodation, prevent eviction and fight for housing justice. Last year alone legal advice and information on housing and debt issues netted over 19,000 enquiries, 5081 of which needed specialist intervention which included free representation at court.

Derbyshire Housing Aid understands that Derbyshire is a heavily rural county where many people find it difficult to access vital services. In response, Derbyshire Housing Aid has established outreach surgeries within Erewash, including ones in Ilkeston and Long Eaton, to ensure that access to specialist advice and support is available in rural communities.

Derbyshire Housing Aid also offers many other services, which all aim to tackle different aspects of homelessness, poor housing and poverty:

  • The Derby Night Shelter is a 14 bed emergency shelter offering refuge and support to street homeless people 365 days a year.
  • The SmartMove project helps people on low incomes to find suitable private rented accommodation by providing a bond in place of a traditional cash deposit.
  • The Next Step project involves our Skills for Life Officer attending schools and youth groups to offer basic advice to students about budgeting basic household maintenance and where to go during a housing crisis.
  • Training and volunteering opportunities to unemployed people offering people the chance to gain new skills, helping to overcome disadvantage and rebuild confidence. Training offered includes Basic Skills and ICT, and OCN qualifications in Job Seeking Skills, Introduction to Housing, Advice Work, Housing Advice and Advocacy, and Dealing with Debt. We also support volunteers in work placements within other organisations.
  • The SmartShare project houses street homeless people with moderate support needs and teaches them life and vocational skills with the aim of helping them to live independently when they take on a tenancy on their own, improving their skills base to gain employment and re-engage them socially and economically within society.
  • SmartSkills - providing independent living vocational skills and work placements for people within our accommodation projects.
