Erewash Borough Council offers access to a Mediation Service where conflict situations arise within the home which could ultimately lead to homelessness.
Mediation is a process in which an impartial third party acts as a facilitator, so that those in conflict may work out how to resolve their dispute.
Terms and agreements
Those in conflict and not the mediators, decide the terms of any agreement reached
Mediation
- Mediation is a confidential process.
- Mediators will explain the limits of confidentiality on the first visit
- Although Mediation looks at the past, it’s focus is on the future
- How you want this situation to be from now on
- Mediation is more likely to get to the root of the problem
- Quite often one incident may have been the cause of a long running dispute
WHERE – The service is brought to you
- Visits – all clients are visited by fully trained mediators
- Joint meetings – if required, are carried out on neutral ground. Mediators will organize a suitable venue
- After mediation – mediators will monitor the situation until necessary
WHEN – If you feel isolated; frustrated; powerless; Mediation empowers. Mediation is offered in conflict situations, for example:
- Personal disagreement
- Home disagreement
- Home tension
HOW – By recommendation from:
- Erewash Borough Council’s Housing Options Section. Tel: 0845 907 2244 extension 3590
WHY – Because conflict situations have many different views that are worthy of consideration:
- There is likely to be a solution that will meet most of the needs of all
- In other methods of conflict resolution one person is a loser; and the other wins
- Mediators believe that both sides can win
MEDIATORS – Mediators are trained to be:
- Good listeners
- Impartial
- Non judgemental
- Supportive of clients throughout the mediation process
- Mediators are fully accredited to Mediation UK
