Social Housing

Applying for social housing

Following the transfer of the housing stock to Three Valleys Housing, the council no longer owns social housing.

Applications for social housing need to be made direct to Three Valleys Housing, or other Housing Associations in the area.

Choice Based Letting is coming Erewash by the end of February 2009. This is a new system of applying for social housing through a system of bidding for empty housing association properties. This gives you more choice about where you want to live. Erewash Borough Council is joining the Home-Options Choice based lettings scheme currently running in High Peak, Derbyshire Dales and Amber Valley.

When the scheme is running, all empty properties will be advertised on a fortnightly basis in a free property sheet.  This system allows you to see what properties are available in your area, and if you are interested in being considered for the property you can express your interest by making a bid.

If you want to see how it runs currently in High Peak and Derbyshire Dales you can access this information on their website at http://www.home-options.org/.

If you want to find out more about the scheme we are holding a series of pre-launch events where staff will be available to demonstrate how the website works, how you can register or how to express an interest in a property. If your interested in finding out more about the scheme then the events are being held at the following locations:

Need advice on all your housing options?

The Housing Options Team provide a wide range of Housing Advice including looking at your full range of housing options, which may include:

  • Social Housing
  • Private Rented Housing
  • Supported Accommodation
  • Shared Ownership

If you want to discuss your housing options please contact us  to discuss.

Are you homeless or threatened with homelessness?

The Council still has a statutory duty to provide assistance to all households who find themselves to be homeless or threatened with homelessness.

This help can be on a wide range of housing matters, including:

  • mortgage and rent arrears repossession,
  • my landlord is asking me to leave,
  • harassment and illegal eviction,
  • parent, family or friend is asking me to leave,
  • rough sleeping or sofa surfing
  • unsatisfactory housing i.e. property disrepair

It is important that you contact us without delay to discuss if you think you are homeless or threatened with homelessness.

Did you know we can help to try and prevent you from becoming homeless?

If you contact us early enough we may be able to prevent your homelessness or at least delay it until we are able to find you somewhere else to live.

Sometimes we can talk to the person who is asking you to leave and negotiate with them for you to stay or at least for your eviction to be delayed until we can help you find alternative housing.

Strategic Housing

The Council has responsibility for strategic housing functions which include the production and delivery of the Housing Strategy, Homelessness Strategy & any other relevant strategies; research on housing needs, local representation on the Supporting People Programme, and partnership working to ensure the delivery of appropriate affordable housing in the Borough.

Homelessness Strategy

Erewash Borough Council’s Homelessness Strategy lays out our key strategic aims in tackling homelessness in the Borough and details how these aims are to be achieved and maps out actions for delivery.

In order to view this strategy & any other relevant strategies – please see the Homelessness Strategy section on this website.

All strategies and protocols are developed in partnership with key agencies through our Erewash Housing and Homeless Forum, which meets bi-monthly to discuss a range of housing and homelessness issues.

Housing Strategy

Whilst the Borough Council is no longer a landlord, we have a responsibility to ensure that we work in partnership with local housing providers to ensure that the Borough’s housing needs are met and that we develop plans and priorities for the coming years.  The Housing Strategy sets out how we are going to achieve this.
