The Council collects waste from 48,000 properties on an alternate weekly basis, one week is black bin collection for household waste and the following week is brown bin collection for garden waste and green bag collection for paper, card, glass and tins. (The only exception to this rule is Ockbrook who present their recycling bags with their black bin.)

There are an average of 72,000 collections per week.

The Council operates a kerbside collection which means bins and bags must be presented at the edge of your property at the point where it joins the pavement or road for 7. a.m.

The area is split into two zones which makes it easier for you and the Council to determine when you need to place either your black or brown bin and recycling out.

The North area zone is (Ilkeston, Cotmanhay, Kirk Hallam, Hallam Fields, Little Eaton, Stanley, Stanley Common, West Hallam) which is serviced by four rounds consisting of 1 driver and 2 loaders which collect black and brown bins on alternate weeks.

The South area zone is (Ockbrook, Borrowash, Breadsall, Breaston, Draycott, Long Eaton, Risley, Sandiacre, Sawley, Stanton by Dale, Dale Abbey, Morley, Risley) is serviced by five rounds which work in exactly the same way as the North.

The recycling service consists of 1 driver and 3 loaders due to the extra lifts for the glass collection and this alternates between the North and South areas using four or five rounds as necessary.

Other services

Bulky collection service

The Council provides a bulky collection service for items that are not suitable for disposing of in your wheelie bin. Our customer service advisors will be happy to clarify which type of service you may require to remove your items.

Bulky items : such as beds, wardrobes, sofas, carpets, tables and chairs are collected by a refuse vehicle which crushes the goods before they are taken away. All glass and mirrors must be broken and placed in a box before collection.

White goods: cookers, washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers, spin dryers, fridges & freezers, hobs, ovens and microwaves are collected by a van as these have to be disposed of differently.

How Much Does it Cost?
A bulky collection cost £20 for six items to be collected. If you require more than six items to be collected then a further cost will be incurred.(Please note: a bed is one item but a bed and mattress is classed as two items)

The cost for the collection of white goods is £15 for three items and a further cost is incurred for more items. (Please note: all fridges/freezers must be emptied of food and preferably taped shut to avoid becoming a hazard to young children/animals)

Clinical waste service

The council collects medical waste from members of the public after referral from their medical authority.
