Bulky waste collection
The Council provides a bulky collection service for items that are not suitable for disposing of in your wheelie bin. Our customer service advisors will be happy to clarify which type of service you may require to remove your items. Please call 0845 9072244 or e-mail contactcentre@erewash.gov.uk for more details.
Bulky items: such as beds, wardrobes, sofas, carpets, tables and chairs are collected by a refuse vehicle which crushes the goods before they are taken away. All glass and mirrors must be broken and placed in a box before collection.
White goods: cookers, washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers, spin dryers, fridges & freezers, hobs, ovens and microwaves are collected by a van as these have to be disposed of differently.
How Much Does it Cost?
A bulky collection costs £21 for up to six items to be collected. If you require more than six items to be collected then a further cost will be incurred. (Please note: a bed is one item but a bed and mattress are classed as two items).
The cost for the collection of white goods is £15.75 for up to three items and a further cost is incurred for more items. (Please note: all fridges/freezers must be emptied of food and preferably taped shut to avoid becoming a hazard to young children/animals)
When is it Collected?
All requests paid for before 12 noon on a Wednesday are collected the following Saturday. Requests received and paid for after 12 noon will be collected on the second Saturday.
How is it collected?
We are not allowed to enter your house to remove the waste, this includes your garage or shed. All items must be left outside on your property in the place stated at the time of booking and must not be left on the pavement or highway.
If there is no access we will leave a note and call back once more on the following Saturday.
Special arrangements can be made for elderly/disabled people living on their own and whose relatives do not live within the Borough. (Please speak to our customer service advisors for help)
Fixtures and fittings
For bathroom suites, kitchen cupboards, sinks, radiators, internal/external doors and window frames we offer a special collections service. Prices start from £39.95 per hour (excluding vat).
Garden waste is also collected by this service, this must be bagged, boxed or bundled before collection.
We usually require a Neighbourhood Warden to inspect the waste and ensure it is suitable for collection prior to providing a quote. To arrange for a special collection please call our Inspector on 0115 9072300.
Could I ask a local charity to take my unwanted items?
If you want to recycle your old furniture you can make a positive difference not only to the environment but also to people and communities.

59 Ray Street, Heanor, DE75 7GF (open Monday - Thursday 8.30am-3.30pm, Friday 8.30am-3pm and Saturday 9am-12.30pm).
The project collects items of furniture free of charge (upholstered items must have a current fire retardant label and TV/HiFi cabinets have to have British kite marked glass). Washing machines and cookers are accepted at a £5 charge to cover electrical testing. The project does not collect TVs, fridges, freezers and large double wardrobes, because of removal problems.
The showroom is open to the general public to purchase items (delivery will incur a £2.50 charge). There is a cafe at the site offering a wide range of refreshments.
Could I offer them someone who may put them to good use?
If you would like to offer your items to someone in your area free of charge 2recycle may be what you are looking for.
Mobile phones
Numerous charity organisations will arrange for or provide envelopes for you to send your phone, charger and accessories to re-processors and distributors. Even better, some charities will accept the phones if you drop them at their store or shop. In addition, some supermarket chains such as Tesco's will also arrange for the re-use or recycling of your old mobile.
Hazardous Waste
We do not collect commercial or industrial waste, builders' rubble, slabs, chemical waste, pesticides, oils, fertilisers or paint and thinners. Some of these items may be taken to the household waste recycling centre on Manners Industrial Estate, Ilkeston which is operated and managed by Derbyshire County Council. Low energy light bulbs contain a small amount of mercury and are therefore classed as hazardous waste, these should be taken to the Civic Ammenity Site on the Manners Industrial Estate in Ilkeston to be disposed of properly, they should not be placed in the household waste bin. If you break a bulb the official advice from the Department of the Environment recommends that you vacate the room for at least 15 minutes before cleaning up the broken bulb with a broom or a damp cloth whilst wearing rubber gloves before placing it in a sealed plastic bag.
