Greater Nottingham Strategic Flood Risk Assessment
Over the past few years we have witnessed the effect of climate change, most noticeably the flooding events in Hull, Tewkesbury, Meadowhall and Lambley. It is also accepted that these flooding events will become more regular and intense.
Planning Policy Statement 25: Development and Flood Risk requires local authorities to undertake, in conjunction with the Environment Agency, a Strategic Flood Risk Assessment which will form part of the evidence base for the Local Development Framework.
The Government has consistently advocated cross-boundary partnerships and the production of the Greater Nottingham Strategic Flood Risk Assessment meets their requirements. The project was undertaken by experienced consultants Black and Veatch and managed by the Environment Agency. The project team was made up of representatives from Broxtowe Borough Council, Erewash Borough Council, Gedling Borough Council, Nottingham City Council, Nottingham Regeneration Limited and Rushcliffe Borough Council.
The aim of the Greater Nottingham Strategic Flood Risk Assessment was to produce floodplain mapping and data which can be used as a planning tool to help us steer new development away from those areas of highest flood risk. In Erewash the Strategy looked at the Rivers Erewash, Trent and Derwent as well as the Ock Brook, Golden Brook and the Nut Brook.
As well as providing the evidence base for our Local Development Framework, the Strategic Flood Risk Assessment will be used in conjunction with the existing flood maps held by the Environment Agency as a material consideration when determining planning applications.
The Non-technical Summary is available to download from this webpage. Unfortunately, the mapping associated with the assessment is too large to download from the internet. However, the complete assessment is available to examine at the Town hall, Long Eaton, the Town Hall, Ilkeston and at the Environment Agency, Scarrington Road, West Bridgford during normal office hours.
For further information on what the SFRA means in terms of development proposals please initially contact the Planning Liaison Team and for copies of the flood mapping and flood level data please contact the External Relations Team at:
