It wasn’t until 1839 and the opening of the Midlands Counties Railway from Nottingham to Derby and the subsequent opening of the Erewash Valley Line that Long Eaton was transformed from an agricultural village into a vibrant industrial town.
By the beginning of the 20th Century Long Eaton was a thriving industrial town dominated by imposing lace factories which rattled and shook with the vibration of hundreds of lace machines.
Today, Long Eaton is recognised as “one of the best set pieces of industrial townscape in Derbyshire, and possibly the East Midlands”. (2005, Barry Joyce MBE, Derbyshire County Council).
Following the submission of a Stage 1 Townscape Heritage Initiative bid, the Heritage Lottery Fund has earmarked almost £1 million to rejuvenate the town through investment in the historic fabric. In addition to the match funding provided by Erewash Borough Council, funding will also come from the Derby and Derbyshire Economic Partnership. In total we will have nearly £3 million to invest in the area through the Townscape Heritage Initiative.
