What is Best Value?
The Government has challenged local councils to look at the way they deliver services to the public and has placed a duty on them to improve the economy, efficiency and effectiveness of the way they deliver those services.
In other words, Best Value means giving the best possible service at a reasonable cost.
How we will achieve Best Value
We will achieve Best Value by:
- trying every day to improve our services
- setting out performance measures and targets to help you judge how successful we are in delivering and improving services;
- publishing a Performance Plan which shows you whether or not we are achieving Best Value;
- showing the quality of our services through gaining awards such as the Charter Mark for Leisure Centres; and
- carrying out Best Value reviews of all our services.
What are Best Value reviews?
We believe that we provide a good service to people in Erewash, but we know that we need to keep improving and changing with the times. The purpose of the reviews is to ask some basic questions under the following four headings which the Government has set.
- Challenge
- Why do we provide the service?
- How do we provide it?
- What benefit does the community get from it?
- Compare
- Are other authorities giving a better service than us?
- Does anybody else offer the same service, and if so, can we learn from them
- Consult
- What do users think of our service?
- Do they have any suggestions on how we can improve the service?
- Can we set ourselves some challenging targets for improving the service?
- Compete
- Will our users get better value through competition?
- Would it be better to use different approaches to delivering services, such as partnerships or private finance?
At the end of the review, we will recommend ways of delivering the service in the future.
