What is a citizenship ceremony?

The Nationality, Immigration and Asylum Act 2002, which came into force on 1st January 2004, requires all successful applicants for naturalization or registration as a British subject to take an oath and pledge at a citizenship ceremony.

This new arrangement applies to all applications the Home Office receives. At the ceremony, new citizens make an oath or affirmation to Her Majesty the Queen and a pledge of loyalty to the United Kingdom. After this, the citizen receives a certificate.

Immigrants can apply for citizenship after living legally in the UK for 5 years or after 3 years if they are married to a Briton.

Our citizenship ceremonies are held at County Hall in Matlock. We ensure that the ceremonies are enjoyable and meaningful. It is hoped that the ceremonies will encourage new citizens to play an active part in the community.
