Licence - Water Sports
In 1996 it became a legal requirement under The Activity Centres (Young Persons' Safety) Act 1995, for providers of certain adventure activities to undergo inspection of their safety management systems and become licensed. This licensing scheme only applies to those who offer activities to young people under the age of 18 years and who operate these activities in a commercial way.
Generally, licensing only applies to these activities when they are done in remote or isolated environment (e.g. climbing on natural terrain requires a licence, climbing on a purpose built wall does not).
The Adventures Activities Licensing Authority inspects activity centres and other activity providers on behalf of the Department of Education and Skills (DfES). If the Licensing Authority is satisfied that the provider complies with nationally accepted standards of good practice, they will issue the licence.
Examples of activities covered are:
- Climbing
- Watersports
- Trekking
- Caving

On 27th February 2004, the Regulatory Reform (Sunday Trading) Order 2004, came into force. This order removes the requirement on large shops (internal floor area of over 280 square metres) in England and Wales, to give prior written notice to Local Authorities of their Sunday trading hours or any change. The order also removes the requirement on Local Authorities to maintain a register of such notifications.
However, occupiers of such large shops will still be required by the Sunday Trading Act 1994, to display their Sunday trading hours. Shops can remain open for a maximum of six hours, no earlier than 10:00am and no later than 18:00pm. Opening hours must be clearly displayed, both inside and outside the premises and Local Authorities will still have the responsibility to enforce compliance within the act.
Small shops are not covered by these restrictions and can open freely. The Sunday Trading Act 1994 also includes specific measures to protect the right of the shop workers who do not wish to work on a Sunday.
Apart from the restrictions mentioned above, it is left to individual shop owners to determine their opening hours in the light of their customer demand.
